Accommodation

Your options depend on your age, programme and destination. Here is how they differ and what is checked before you travel.

In short

  • The available options are shown on the programme page and in your quote.
  • On Junior programmes, host-family and residential accommodation include the supervision arranged by the centre.
  • Host families are recruited by the school. Every adult in the home is checked, and the home is visited by the school or EduLeap before a student is placed there.
  • Meals, private bathrooms, laundry, Wi-Fi and distance from school vary, so always check your trip details.
  • If something is not right, contact EduLeap straight away. We will review it with the school and work towards a solution.

Host family, residence or apartment?

There is no single best type of accommodation. The right choice depends on your age, independence and the experience you want.

Host family

Live in a local home, share everyday life and use the language beyond the classroom. Rooms may be single or shared, and meal plans depend on the programme.

Residence or college

Live with other students, with lessons, meals and activities on site or nearby. Junior programmes include centre rules, curfews and supervision.

Apartment

An independent option for adults, where available. It may be private or shared and does not include the supervision provided on Junior programmes.

For a school year abroad, available choices may include a local school with a host family or a full-board boarding school, depending on the destination.

Which options are available at each age?

Junior 9–13 and 14–17Host family or residence, where offered by the programme. Both form part of a package with tuition, stated meals, activities and supervision.
Ages 16–17 on an adult courseSome adult courses accept students from 16. Anyone under 18 may stay only with a host family. The school’s under-18 rules still apply, but there is no 24/7 supervision as on a Junior programme.
Adults, including 40+ and 50+Host family, residence or apartment, depending on the school and destination. These are independent stays.
School year abroadA local school with a host family or a boarding school, depending on the country, programme and availability.

How are host families selected?

Host families are recruited by our partner schools. Every adult living in the home completes the required checks, and the home is visited by the school or EduLeap before a student is placed there.

  • The home and the family’s suitability are assessed before students are placed there.
  • Adults in the household complete the locally required checks, including police, DBS or equivalent checks where applicable.
  • References, experience, emergency procedures and student feedback are considered.
  • Families are then monitored periodically under the programme’s procedures.

Families come in many forms and may have different backgrounds and routines. What matters is that the home is suitable, safe and ready to welcome an international student.

Before you travel

For shorter stays, accommodation details normally arrive with your pre-departure documents, around one week before travel. For a school year abroad, the match is normally shared 4–8 weeks before departure, and the student can usually meet the family by video.

What is life in a residence like?

A residence brings students and staff together, often with the school, dining hall and activities on the same campus. Facilities vary widely: rooms may be single or shared, with private or shared bathrooms.

On Junior programmes:

  • minors are accommodated separately from adults;
  • responsible staff are available overnight;
  • the centre uses curfews, roll calls and a missing-student procedure;
  • time out and free time follow the rules for the student’s age and programme.

On adult programmes, a residence is an independent form of accommodation. Reception, security, cleaning and facilities depend on the individual property.

What does the accommodation include?

The programme page and your quote are the definitive source for what is included. Before booking, check:

  • whether the room is single or shared and whether the bathroom is private or shared;
  • whether the meal plan is full board, half board, breakfast only or self-catering;
  • Wi-Fi, bed linen, towels, cleaning and laundry;
  • distance from school and any transport required;
  • any refundable damage deposit required by the accommodation;
  • supplements for special diets, a single room or a private bathroom.

Stated meals form part of Junior programme packages. Tell us about allergies, medical needs or special diets before you book so we can check what the accommodation can provide and whether there is an extra cost.

Special requests, changes and support

You may request to share with a friend, a particular diet, a private bathroom or other features. Requests depend on availability and are not confirmed until they appear in writing in your quote or confirmation.

Medical needs, allergies and accessibility requirements are not simply preferences. Tell us as early as possible so we can check whether the programme is suitable.

1

Tell us about the problem

The student or family contacts EduLeap using the details in the portal.

2

We review it together

We speak to the school, accommodation or host family to understand what has happened.

3

We work towards a solution

If the concern is valid or cannot be resolved, we look for another placement, subject to availability.

Timing and possible costs depend on the reason for the change and the alternatives available. We do not promise a move within a fixed number of hours, but any safety concern is treated as an immediate priority.
